Glam Boaters in West Wales Day 1 08 05 10
to say they were heading across to West Wales Friday for the
weekend. So I headed down early Saturday morning with the
view of coming home in the evening to go to a birthday party
that night. A quick look at the tide times and forecast suggested
it was going to be a windy weekend, force 4 or 5 possible 6 or 7
with gales.
Not long after I arrived at the camp site at Newgale Sands
near St Davids we were heading down to St Brides Haven
where I camped a few weeks ago. The plan was to take a
short trip out to Stack Rocks and back along the cliffs.
The group consisted mainly of river boats which struggled
to make much headway into the wind. Some of the group had
never been at sea before and it wasnt long before people were
in the water swimming.
As I was helping a member of the group while others were
performing rescues on a few that had ended up in the water
I was caught out by a wave that hit me side on. It was one of
them moments where your to far gone and think bugger it,
and I rolled into the water. Whilst underwater I was more
concerned about loosing my hat than rolling. I made one
attempt and failed, second attempt my knees popped my
spray deck off and I was also swimming with the fishes! After
that turn of events we turned back to the shelter of the bay.
Exploring a cave and rock hopping near St Brides.
Wet and cold and my tail between my legs in shame of capsizing
we headed back to camp. Not happy with the lack of miles under
my boat today I decided to stay the night. I had brought my sleeping
bag in case but nothing else, no change of clothes or food for the next day.
Luckily my van doubles as a sauna with the heating on full blast to dry
my sopping wet gear.
That afternoon the group headed over to St Nons Bay for
a bit coast steering. I headed on to Porth Clais to launch and
follow the group to take some pictures. The boy levitating above
is only 12 yrs old and was his first time. To be fair he did really
well considering the water was absolutely freezing!
Hopeless, they never would have got a part in the film Titanic!
"save me Jack!!"
Whilst they were throwing themselves off cliffs I paddled across
Caerfai Bay where there is an impressive cave and natural arch.
Porth Clais. The water floods through this natural harbour at
high water which is convenient, but a long walk at low tide.
Back at camp later that evening for some charcoal food poisoning.
After cremating the sausages and burgers we decided to cook
Stuarts at the point of the night where he has had enough

Power of the Tide 06 11 10
There was no plan, but it was going to be a one way trip. The tide was due to change about 19:00 well after sunset. It started to rain and was probably not going to be an exciting paddle but at least I was on the water, no better place to be!
I tread carefully down the beach trying not to slip or sink. Spot the mud? That isnt water in front of my boat!
Flat Holm was divided by a sand bank.
I made good progress averaging between 6 and 7 knots with the help of the tide. There was a little confused water around Lavernock Point (above). I had a little play turning in an eddy and trying to fight the tide, no chance it was too strong.
There was no question to which way the flow was going!
Under Penarth Pier my paddle blade were scraping the sea bed.
I ferry glided out from the pier and dropped onto the outer wrach buoy.
Cardiff barrage was alive with boats constantly coming out and going in. Oh and thats not water in front either! Nearly caught me out.
I paddled past the water outlets, that shows you how high up (or low down I was) the water is on the other side.
I was thinking about hopping over the barrage into the bay but it was a long climb up with the water so low.
Hannah wasnt ready to pick me up, to busy watching the rugby! So it was either sit on a muddy Penarth beach and await my lift or test the power of the tide.
It started to rain again, Flat and Steep Holm were disappearing under the weather. Progress past the pier was slow, averaging about 2.8kts, but it picked up again further along.
Flow was about 3.5/4hrs in now so was in full swing. Reaching Lavernock Point the flow was moving fast. I stayed close to the shore and went for it powering through the flow. That wasnt too hard!
In fact that was easy as I relax looking up ahead at Sully Island. I glance down at my GPS...2.5kts and increasing...backwards! "bugger!" I paddled my arse off and got to break even point 0 knots. I lifted my skeg and aimed slighty to the shore hoping for an eddy of sorts?? At last 0.8 knots, at least Im moving in the right direction. Very slowly I made it closer and closer to the shore and my speed picked up.
Looking out to Flat Holm the rain had moved on. I crashed out on the back of my boat, exhausted!
The fight wasnt over I was still only managing around 1.8 to 2 knots. It was getting late and with the cloud cover, ever increasingly darker. My first night paddle maybe?
Finally I made it into Sully sound, I could walk it from here if I had to! The tide was ripping through the middle of the sound but was slow moving close to the mainland shore.
I was contemplating a play but I was shattered. I felt like I had done a massive paddle not Penarth and back.
At least the walk wasnt too far now.

Drake H Sparkman III
I was saddened yesterday to read about the tragic death of Drake Sparkman, III last Friday. I had no idea he was ill. Drakes connection to Sparkman & Stephens is not just that he was the grandson of one of the founders of our company, he was a good friend of Sparkman & Stephens and his involvement with sailing was commendable.
I served with Drake on the Board of Trustees of the Landing School for a time. I dropped off of the Board after 10 years due to time constraints but Drake kept at it for many years. This past January I did participate in a Landing School "Summit" where faculty, Trustees and industry participants spent a weekend discussing and exploring where the school wished to be in 2020. Drake was his usual self, adding a lot to the discussion.
I was also involved with another project that was close to Drake, the Sail4Kids fund raiser at American Yacht Club to benefit the Maria Fareri Childrens Hospital in Westchester. Drake was a driving force.
Our condolences go out to Drakes family. He will be missed. He was not only a personable gentleman, but one who gave a lot back to his community.
