Drake H Sparkman III

I was saddened yesterday to read about the tragic death of Drake Sparkman, III last Friday. I had no idea he was ill. Drakes connection to Sparkman & Stephens is not just that he was the grandson of one of the founders of our company, he was a good friend of Sparkman & Stephens and his involvement with sailing was commendable.

I served with Drake on the Board of Trustees of the Landing School for a time. I dropped off of the Board after 10 years due to time constraints but Drake kept at it for many years. This past January I did participate in a Landing School "Summit" where faculty, Trustees and industry participants spent a weekend discussing and exploring where the school wished to be in 2020. Drake was his usual self, adding a lot to the discussion.

I was also involved with another project that was close to Drake, the Sail4Kids fund raiser at American Yacht Club to benefit the Maria Fareri Childrens Hospital in Westchester. Drake was a driving force.

Our condolences go out to Drakes family. He will be missed. He was not only a personable gentleman, but one who gave a lot back to his community.

What you get when you build a boat

Whilst on my poor knees the other day, drilling away on the subject of a future blog post, it occurred to me that -- despite the sore knees and aching back -- building this boat was the most fun Id had in years. And I wondered why, why it was so much fun?

It surely isnt the boat itself, or the future of rowing and sailing it promises. If Im honest, I dont particularly need a small boat to go sailing. I did plenty of sailing this summer on other peoples boats.

No, its not the destination of completing the boat, so much as the journey of building it. Its the thrill of the possibility.  The high of anticipation. The first date with a band saw. Thats what makes building boats so much fun for me.

I think Ive mentioned before that this blog is not a how-to -- only a damn fool would try to learn how to build a boat from a complete novice like me. There are many boat building books (BBBs) that explain in detail the correct way to loft, or pick up a pattern, or do any of the million things you need to do to build a boat.

Unfortunately, boat building is an art, not a science. Thus the BBBs leave you plenty of room for creativity -- that is, errors -- and Im pretty sure I made every error possible in picking up the patterns for Cabin Boys bones.Thats why I call this blog a how-not-to... Here we go.

After lofting the body plan, the next step was to build the 4 bones -- or molds -- that Cabin Boys skin would be bent and shaped over. It seemed like a pretty simple process. Just cut a few boards to the correct shape, and screw together. Easy-peasy.

I build my first mold

Even I was able to do this without much fuss. Just line up a board with the side of one of the body plans, tick off the bottom line and floor line on the inside and outside of board, connect the ticks, and saw off straight.

Then just tack it onto the lofting board with some small finishing nails, leaving the heads sticking out a bit so you can pull them out later.

The Official Beer of the Unlikely Boat Builder

I will say again that this would have been easier to do if my lofting board had been on the floor, instead of on the wall. It is pretty awkward to line up a long board with a pencil line, and to hold it exactly in place while ticking off the floor and bottom lines. Gravity was definitely NOT helping! But with ample cursing and a Blue Moon or two, it can be done.

Next, I cut out and screwed on the bottom piece (Im sure there are actual names for the pieces of a mold, but I dont know them. If you do know them, please let me know!) To keep the lines stable, I was careful to use 4 screws in each corner.

Attaching the bottom piece

The final step is to remove the almost-finished mold from the lofting board and attach the floor piece... Again, using 4 screws on each leg, just to make it really solid.

Attaching floor piece to mold, making sure floor and bottom lines are level

Beautiful, right? My breast swelling with pride, I stood back to admire this amazing feat of wood working, when a splinter of doubt began to niggle at me...

Hadnt I read something, somewhere, about the body plan sometimes being drawn to the outside of the plank, and sometimes to the inside?

This is an important distinction, because if the plans are drawn to the inside of the plank, then my form was the correct size, because it would be the inside of the sides and bottom that my form would touch.

But if the plans are drawn to the outside of the plank, then the builder must reduce the size of the molds by the depth of the side and bottom planking.

As I recalled, this should have been clearly marked on the plans. I studied them... carfully. Not a word. Now what? Maybe I was lucky and John Atkin had sensibly drawn the body plan lines to the inside of the plank?

I re-read the lofting chapters in all my BBBs. They all agreed: The default -- if not specifically spelled out on the plans -- is to measure to the outside of the planking.

This is the most flexible way to draw the plans, since plans are really just a guide... the designer has no idea what size planking you will use, so he leaves it up to you to buy the planking and then reduce the molds by the correct amount.

Very sensible, really... only my beautiful mold was wrong.

Id have to to re-do the body plan on my lofting board to take into account the size planks I would use on the bottom and sides. Then I could remove all 16 screws from my mold, re-cut it to the correct size, and re-assemble it.

And that is what makes boat building so much fun.

Another Layer of Veneer and Shaping the Outer Stem

March saw the end of applying the first layer of Mahogany veneer, as seen above, and the beginning of the second layer.

This second layer is applied at about a 90 degree angle to the first.

Of course, the scribing as described in the previous post continues. Note some of the fancy scribing up near the keel in the picture above.
The hull looks different, a little more streamline, with the strips running from the top of the bow and angled toward the lower stern. Both directions can be seen from the bow.
Here are some "action shots" of the second layer being applied...
The hull is wetted with the epoxy.

Note all those plastic staples holding the veneer on...

The underside of the next strip is wetted with epoxy, and Richard mixes more epoxy with wood flour to the consistency of frosting.

The thickened epoxy is applied over the previously wetted area to fill voids and give a base for the strip to smoosh into...

Absolutely no voids are wanted in the hull. Richard is basically creating plywood in the shape of a boat by gluing up these thin layers.

The pre-scribed strip with the wetted back is set into position as marked.

Once the marks line up, a couple of staples hold it in position so that it can be smoothed down evenly.

Of course, if only one or two staples hold the upper end down, then as you work to the lower end the upper end will pop up...

Working it back down, from one end to the other. It seems to have a mind of its own.

Applying lots and lots of nails seems the only way to tame it.
All the way around every curve.

Pow, pow, pow...

Richard is starting to get very tired of this phase. It will be about 200 hrs into this phase when both layers of veneering are complete on both sides of the hull. He is ready for something new.
During some down time while waiting for the last of the plastic nails and more epoxy to arrive, Richard started to lay-up the outer stem. He used the extra mahogany veneer.

The outer stem needs to be shaped exactly the same as the inner stem. The stem is the front edge of the boat, as seen above. A piece of the veneer was screwed directly to the existing inner stem, and left to hang over on the right and left, to create a jig for the gluing and clamping. A layer of tape was applied to the veneer jig to prevent any excess epoxy from sticking to the jig. This would allow the thick built-up outer stem to be removed and give access for the jig to be unscrewed from the inner stem when complete.
Layer upon layer of veneer were epoxied together and clamped to the jig.
All the clamps that were needed to maintain the tight curve makes it look like a porcupine.
The outer stem is made long to run all the way up to accommodate the bow sprit (toward the floor at this point).
By the keel, it also runs long, and will be shaped into the deadwood.

The outer stem that has been being layed-up over days is then unclamped from its base form. The jig was then unscrewed from the inner stem.

The resulting thick stem is a perfect fit.

It will need to be shaped, tapered and cut to the correct width when it is ready to be permanently attached.

ALOT Step 2

This step is where the basic shape of the boat is drawn on the sides.  The key points that define the shape are measured and drawn.   A nail is then driven at that point for an "x" marks the spot mark.    A thin batten (1/8"x3/4") is then used to connect the points together. A pencil line is then drawn on the edge of the batten.  There is a bit of experimentation needed to get the batten through the points and held in place.  Heavy objects, extra nails can really help with this.

The object is to end up with a line that is nice and smooth, without any wrinkles.

Eastern Washington Moveable Messabout Day 4

Sept 12, EWMM day4:          Scratch..scratch..scratch..squeeeeek..scratch...scratch..squeek.....
I awoke with a start.  I listened.  There was something outside my tent.  Skreeeeek..scratch..scratch..

Was it ... a bear?

Nearby, in one of my tents pockets was my camera.  I unzipped my arctic mummy bag just enough to get an arm out. I unzipped my rain fly just enough to get my hand and camera out.  Holding my camera up like a periscope, I recorded a 360 degree panorama.  Then I reversed the entire process.

I viewed the panorama on my cameras tiny 2" screen.

Whew, no bears!  It was safe to climb out of my tent.  Wisps of fog covered the lake. The fading remains of the cold wind that blew all night still rocked our boats on the sandy beach.

The strange sounds turned out to be a nearby dock rubbing against its pilings, and the rustling of my rain fly against the tent.

Today was going to be essentially a travel day.  The plan was to break camp, quickly head back to the launch, retrieve the boats, grab a quick shower, caravan to our next destination (Hunters, WA) and set up camp there.

It was quite cold again, so we started a campfire, had breakfast, broke camp and off we went.  That was when I noticed my centerboard was jammed in the up position, with sand and gravel from rocking on the beach all night long.  There was simply no time to unjam it now.  It would have to wait until we got to camp tonight.

After retrieving the boats, the caravan hit the road, for our 2hr drive from Priest Lake, Idaho to Hunters WA.
After arriving at Lake Roosevelt, we set up camp.  Then it was time to "floss the centerboard".  Dan and I used one of my nylon tie-down straps to "floss" the sand and gravel out of my centerboard case and freed up my jammed centerboard.  Im really glad I made the cap of my centerboard case removable.

Tomorrows mission: Explore Lake Roosevelt and the amazing antique cars at Hunters.
